Buying bathroom fixtures and accessories online
We sell bathroom fit-out and nothing else, so this is the short version of what we have learned: what is worth spending on, what needs a licensed trade, and what to measure before you order.
What is worth spending on
A bathroom has two kinds of purchase in it. There are the pieces that get touched every day and are seen every day, which is tapware, a shower mixer, a mirror and lighting. And there are the pieces that solve a problem and can be replaced in five minutes, which is most of the accessories.
The first group is worth paying for, because the failure mode is expensive: a tap with a plated zinc body pits from the inside, a cheap black finish wears off around the handle, and replacing either means a plumber twice. The second group is worth buying on fit rather than on price.
Plumbing and electrical work
Tapware, shower mixers and shower panels are plumbing work. Exhaust fans, hardwired vanity lights, lit mirrors and mirror cabinets with shaver sockets are electrical work. In Australia both are licensed trades.
That is not a disclaimer we add at the end. It changes what you should buy: if there is no power near the wall you want a mirror on, a tilting mirror on brackets is a better purchase than a lit one, and no amount of specification will change that.
Finishes and how they wear
Matte black is the most popular finish we sell and the least forgiving. It hides limescale far better than chrome and it shows nothing when it is dry, but an abrasive cream or a bleach-based cleaner takes the coating off, and it does not come back.
Brushed nickel is the safest match for an existing chrome bathroom. Brushed gold reads warm against white tile and timber. All three finishes on the waterfall faucet are the same price, so the choice is about the room rather than the budget.
Light you can actually see by
The most common lighting mistake in a bathroom is a single downlight in the ceiling above the mirror. It throws your own shadow onto your face, which is exactly the wrong place for it.
Light from in front fixes it: a vanity bar at or slightly above eye level, or a mirror lit from the front rather than only behind. A backlit mirror looks better and lights the room; a front-lit one is the one you shave and put on makeup with. The lit mirror here does both.
Measuring before you order
Three measurements save most of the returns we see. The outside width of the bath across the rim, for a bath caddy. The width of the gap beside the vanity or the toilet, for a cabinet or a rolling cart. And the width of the vanity itself, for a mirror, because a 71 cm mirror over a double vanity looks lost.
